A Mural Dedication and Donor Recognition Ceremony for the third and final Route 66 mural in Boswell Park has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, May 6.

The mural, “Nelson Family Legacy,” was completed this week. It pays tribute to the family that donated the land for Route 66 west of Highway 5, then built and operated several landmark businesses, such as the Nelson Hotel and Nelson’s Dream Village.

The ceremony will include a public reading of the 143 names of those who donated $100 or more to the mural project, which cost $75,000. All donors are urged to attend. A plaque recognizing the donors by name has been placed on the back of the first mural.

Classic cars also are urged to park in the cul de sac by the murals before the ceremony.

The new mural will be left uncovered until the morning of the ceremony.

Whitehill Enterprises of Joplin was the mural contractor. The Lebanon-Laclede County Route 66 Society raised most of the money for the project and is organizing the ceremony.
